The Asus Eee PC 701 was introduced around two years ago, but it remains an attention-getter until today. The Asus Eee PC 701 comes with a 900-MHz Intel Celeron Processor, Asus Xandros-based Linux operating system, 512 MB RAM but only 4GB storage space.

With only seven inches of screen display, one may find that the Asus Eee PC 701 may be too small compared to a notebook with a 14-inch LCD. Asus, however, designed this netbook to appeal to travel-happy computer users. People who do lots of travels wouldn’t mind staring onto a small screen as long as they can surf the Internet and work wherever they go. For an ultra-mobile PC, seven inches of screen is already adequate. The Asus Eee PC 701 won’t even be noticeable even on a small sling bag.

The Asus Eee PC 701 offers a user-friendly, tab-based interface, with only six easy-to-understand options: Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings and Favorites. It also comes with document-handling applications, e-mail and other software that might come in handy when doing work while on the go. This may appeal to children and older computer users who are novice to thinking machines.

The Asus Eee PC 701 also supports a wide range of digital multimedia: MP3s, WMAs and even MPEG-4s. Although one may find the netebook’s 4GB of disk space not be enough for digital media storage.

Start-up is pretty fast and applications also load quickly, even though the Asus Eee PC 701 uses a Celeron processor and a 512MB of RAM.

Specifications
Central Processing Unit Mobile Celeron-M ULV 900MHz

Pros

– Eee PC 701’s built-in WiFi 802.11b/g allows fast automatic Internet detection and connection at hot spots;

– Weighs just around two pounds;

– More portable power adapter compared to other netebooks in its weight class;

– Price is around a fifth of other netebooks in its weight class;

– User-friendly interface;

– Pre-installed plug-ins like Quick Time, Java Runtime Environment, Adobe Flash Player, Real Time Player and Quicktime Player;

– Ready to use for Skype, Messenger and Pidgin messaging systems;

– Manual allows Windows XP installation, in case one hates Linux operating system;

– Decent peripheral recognition for USB drives and dongles; and

– Memory upgradeable to 1GB or GB.

Cons

– Eee PC 701’s 3.5 hours of battery life is lower than other portable notebooks, which often offers five hours of power time;

– Only 4GB of disk space, with only 1GB of usable space as the netebook’s system already occupies 3GB of the entire memory. One may have to acquire an external hard drive for larger file storage;

– Since Eee PC 701 has no DVD drive, one may have to use a separate optical drive to install preferred programs and applications; and

– Built-in camera could fetch only 0.3 megapixel of image.

Conclusion

The Asus Eee PC 701 is one small-and-sleek but snappy machine. This netebook offers a lot for a considerable cost – making it one of the best value-priced lightweight computers. The Asus Eee PC 701 allows anyone to do easy computing at affordable price and at very portable size.
